Swine Flu Preparedness

What is the Swine Flu? Should you be worried about what you are hearing on the news? Should you have a Swine Flu Preparedness Plan?

There is no doubt that the news can scare the masses into believing an imminent pandemic is about to wipe out millions of people. While the chances are slim, having a Swine Flu Preparedness Plan might be a good idea.

The Swine Flu (Swine Influenza) is a mutation of Bird Flu (Avian Influenza) and a strain of the Human Influenza. No one really knows how serious the "Swine Flu" is just yet. Panicking is the worse thing you can do. It is easy to get caught up in the sensationalized news reports and lose sight of reality.

Having a plan does not mean that you are paranoid or crazy. In fact, every home should have emergency supplies and a survival kit in the event of a catastrophic event. More specifically, having a plan that helps you to avoid becoming a victim of a biological attack or other health crisis is a good idea.

So, what should you do?

1. Planning a way to communicate with loved ones and having a meeting place or two will help you to stay connected in the event of an emergency. Having one meeting place and one alternate is a good idea to start.

2. Stocking enough food and water for a week will give you a source of food if the stores become bare or if travel is not possible.

3. Having batteries, candles, a radio, and some flashlights for your disaster kit is a must.

4. Stay informed, pay attention to news reports and the instructions of local, State and Federal Government.

5. For biological disasters, keeping face masks on hand will help prevent infection. A face mask should not be used for more than a day since they can be easily soiled.

For up to date reports, visit The Centers For Disease Control and The Department Of Homeland Security and find out how to create a Swine Flu Preparedness Plan if necessary.
